  • Trans-Asia rail link
    • It is a project to create an integrated freight network across Europe and Asia. The project was initiated in the 1960’s, with the objective of providing continuous 14,000 km rail link between and with possible further connections to Europe and Africa.
    • India along with Myanmar needs to construct a 350 km link between Jiribam (India) and Moreh (Myanmar) as part of this project.

    • The total outstanding amount of all SHG and MFI programmes is only around Rs. 4,000 crores. But there is a huge unmet demand. It is estimated that about Rs. 48,000 crores is needed to cater to the credit demand of 6 crore (60 mn) poor families.
  • South-South cooperation under UNIDO aegis
    • A South-South Industrial Cooperation Centre is established in New Delhi by UNIDO.
    • It is envisaged to harness the existing resources and forge new linkages specifically for the development of industry in the South.

    • The expenses of the centre will be funded by contributions from Indian government. Additional funds will be raised from governmental and non-governmental donors.
  • Why is ban on cement exports to control inflation, a bad step?
    • It will hit companies in the Kutch-Saurashtra region that specifically cater to the Gulf region; and this is distributionally unjust.
    • The ban will give India a reputation as an unreliable supplier of industrial goods, so world buyers will levy an implicit price penalty when negotiating future contracts with Indian exporters.
    • Inflation cannot be checked simply by bans and price controls, since it is substantially a monetary phenomenon.
