  • Tourist arrivals in India in 2006
    • Tourist arrivals have crossed the 7.25 million mark.
    • For the first time ever, the break up includes NRIs, PIOs besides foreign tourist arrivals. 4.43 million were foreign tourists and 2.82 million were NRIs and PIOs. PIOs are Persons of Indian Origin.
    • The forex earnings from tourism in 2006 were $6.8 billion – up from $5.7 billion in 2005.
  • Tough times ahead for VAS players
    • The government is mandating that all short codes for SMS should have five digits in place of the current 4 digits. It is mandating that from May 2007, all the codes should have the number 5 prefixed to them.
    • The VAS (Value Added Service) players in the telecom market are up in arms against this proposed move, as that would mean losing out their established branding.
    • The government is not convinced about their losing the branding with the existing numbers and says that the complaint of the VAS players is not worth taking note of. It says that just as municipal corporations can demolish constructions, it can also come up with any change in numbering system to suit the network needs any time.
  • An interesting story about discovery of sucralose and pronounciation
    • It is a very interesting story about how pronunciation can lead to misunderstandings. In this story the misunderstanding led to discovery of a new material that is 600 times sweeter than normal sugar.
    • One Mr. Shashikant Phadnis was studying chemistry at Queen Elizabeth College in London in 1975. He was working with his advisor Leslie Hough, to develop new insecticides and had just added sulfuryl chloride, a highly toxic chemical, to a sugar solution. Hough asked him to ‘test’ it, but Phadnis heard ‘taste’ and put a small amount on the tip of his tongue. And bingo, the new compound “sucralose” was discovered.
  • Hoysala architecture
    • Of the temples built during that period (Hoysalas ruled from Mysore during the 12th century AD), those at Belur, Halebid and Somnathpur are the only surviving ones. While the Belur and Halebid temples suffered from heavy invasions during the 14th century, the Somnathpur temple is near its original condition.
    • The star shaped temple at Somnathpur is considered to be the latest and best preserved example of the Hoysala architecture. It has the Orasanna and Chennakesava shrines.

    • The city an a company called Earthlink have reached an agreement to offer free wireless Internet access, promising to make it the first major US city to deliver multiple WiFi services city-wide.

    • The total FDI inflows this year are expected to peak to about $14 billion.
    • Delhi and Mumbai garnered the major share of the FDI inflows during the period January 2000 to October 2006 with about 25% and 21% share each. In absolute terms, the share of Delhi was at Rs. 30,673.73 crores while that of Mumbai was at Rs. 25,685.45 crores.
    • In the efforts to attract more FDI, the initiative taken by Tamilnadu to subsidize training programs is considered very innovative.

  • About marathons
    • The marathon is a long distance running event of 42.195 kilometers.
    • The name ‘marathon’ comes from the legend of Pheidippides, a Greek soldiers who was sent from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been miraculously defeated in the Battle of Marathon.
