  • Global beer giants
    • InBev is the world’s largest brewer in volume terms.
    • The other companies competing with it at an international level are Anheuser Busch (A-B), Carlsberg and Heineken.
  • India’s beer market
    • India’s annual consumption is pegged at 108 mln cases. Per capita consumption is about 0.8 litre, considered very low. This is for FY 2006.
    • UB and SABMiller account for 80-85% of the beer market.
  • M&A deals in India
    • Touched about $24 bn in the first 10 months of 2006.
    • There have been a total of 380 strategic M&As announced.
    • Out of these 209 are cross border deals.

    • It is estimated that India would need about 17,000 pilots over the next 20 years.
  • Credit growth figures
    • For home loans it is growing by 54%, real estate 102% and credit cards 199%.
    • Hence the finance minister warned the bankers against excessive growth.
  • Microfinance scene in Andhra Pradesh
    • The MFIs have covered about 8 mln women, or 80% of AP’s poorest of the poor into SHGs (Self Help Groups). There are now over 6 lakh SHGs in AP, over 28,000 village units and 910 mandal samakhyas, all registered under the Mutually Aided Cooperative Societies Act, 1995.
    • AP accounts for more than a third of all SHGs in India.
  • Rural banking scene
    • About 48% of the households, 51% of farm households, and 78% rural, non-farm households still don’t avail banking services.
    • The population per branch now is 23,000 while villages per branch ratio is about 19.
    • Penetration of savings account in rural areas was low at 18%, but was as high as 104% in urban and semi-urban areas.
  • Insurance industry
    • Entire premium collected by general insurance industry last year was at Rs. 20,000 cr. which is a mere 0.5% of the GDP.
    • The insurance premium from life insurance was just a shade better at 2.5% of the GDP. That translates to about Rs .1 lk crore.
